This flexible membrane allows fluid movement. These types of pumps can handle many different types of fluids, even those with some solid particulates. The construction of the pump protects the piston from corrosion and reduces seal problems. By definition, a positive displacement pump moves a certain, constant volume of fluid from the intake side of the pump to the discharge side of the pump. Theoretically, the volume displaced by the pump should be independent of the pressure encountered at the discharge point. This is not necessarily true, however, for all pumps classified as positive displacement pumps. In practice, internal parts of the pump can deform due to increased pressure, causing the displacement volume of the pump to change slightly. Reciprocating pumps are positive displacement pumps in which a piston or a diaphragm displaces a given amount of fluid with each stroke. The change in internal volume of the pump creates high pressure, which forces fluid into the discharge line. For diaphragm pumps, on the intake stroke, the fluid enters the cylinder through a suction check valve. On the discharge stroke, pressure on the diaphragm forces the fluid into the discharge line through a discharge check valve. Double diaphragm pumps help to minimize stroke pulsations, and provide greater volume than single pumps. The diaphragm pump is a versatile pump appropriate for a variety of applications. Determining the correct pump for an application depends largely upon the type of fluid being pumped, the required flow of the fluid, the fluid's viscosity and the size of the solid particulates within the fluid. In general, servicing these pumps is rather easy and economical, although the application will ultimately determine the maintenance frequency.
